I turn 46 on Sunday. (Happy Mother’s Day, Moms!)
I’m squarely midlife, but there’s no crisis on the horizon.
Here’s why I think that is:
1. MEASURING SUCCESS
I measure success based on how far I’ve come, not how far I have to go. On my birthday, I like to reflect on the last 20 years as a check-in. At 26, I was $80,000 in debt post-DJ “career”, selling job slots at HotJobs. Today, I own a successful financial planning business. Not too shabby.
2. IF I MEET THE MAN I COULD HAVE BEEN, I’ll RECOGNIZE HIM
My mom was wrong. I’m not perfect. But I still try to live up to my full potential every day. Whether that’s not selling out by taking the easy route or something as mundane as not cutting corners on my daily reps, I’m growing every day.
3. I DO WHAT I LOVE
I spent my 20’s in search of that elusive career holy grail – doing something I loved. The light bulb went off at age 29, but it would take another 15 years before that dream became a reality. And along the way, everything I sacrificed – from money to sleepless nights – was a price worth paying to end here where I’m more excited for Monday mornings than Friday afternoons.
There’s no impulsive Ferrari purchase in my future and I think that’s from framing my success for a win, striving to meet my potential daily, and doing what I love.
