30,000 days to floss and drink champagne

I Have A Confession

My friends are getting together at 5am this Sunday to watch the Formula1 championship live.
I declined.

I said it was because I wake up at 4:45am 6 days a week and didn’t want to add a 7th, but that’s not really true.

The truth is – it would take away from the time I spend working on Sundays.

I regularly RSVP “no” to birthday parties and happy hours and BBQ’s so I can work. I’ve grown resentful of the holidays for all the valuable hours of productivity they chew up.

I tell myself I work so hard now so I won’t have to later.

I tell myself I’m working for something bigger than myself, so it’s a worthy sacrifice.

I tell myself that business is my hobby, my sport, my passion the same way golf is to many of my friends.

All of that is true.

And yet…

99% Floss And 1% Drink Champagne

A highly respected thought leader in my industry recently talked about a 99/1 portfolio. It’s a portfolio that is 99% traditional well-diversified index portfolio and 1% digital assets.

In other words, 99% is serious money and 1% is a swing-for-the-fences bet on something that has a realistic chance of a huge upside.

Similarly, an FZ member once told me before an appointment that her life philosophy was “Floss and drink champagne”. (Unfortunately (or fortunately?) our appointment was the “floss”.)

You Only Get 30,000 Days

I do think finding and dedicating ourselves to a worthy cause is our primary purpose on this earth. After all, you need to floss every day – 99%.

But after you check that box, you’ve got to drink some champagne every now and then – 1%.

Drew Houston, the co-founder of Dropbox once said we only get 30,000 days. If you want a priority check, just calculate how many you’ve already spent.

I’m down 16,242 with 13,758 days to go.

So before I go full “Ebenezer”, I’m going to start investing 1% in things birthday parties and happy hours and BBQ’s.

I promise to work on my holiday resentment.

And I’ll celebrate Sunday morning with my friends when Max Verstappen upsets Lewis Hamilton for the F1 championship.
