My credit card finally gave way and slid into the door jam. “Got it!”
I worked the credit card down until I hit the latch. 5 minutes after wrestling the latch and I heard a pop as the door swung open.
I turned and high-fived Nicole.
Before you call the cops, let me explain. We watched our neighbor move out on Friday, so we knew the apartment was vacant.
“Umm okay, Rick. But vacant or not, why are you breaking into apartments?”
We needed the toilet. For the last 24 hours, our toilet was clogged and unusable.
Between old coffee cans and Starbucks, we had gotten by thinking it was only a matter of time until we got our toilet back.
We tried plunging. When that didn’t work, we went to Fredericksen Hardware and bought a heavy-duty plunge AND a toilet auger. When that didn’t work, we called the plumber. When that didn’t work, we called our management company who couldn’t get anyone out until Monday morning.
We thought we’d have to go to a hotel for the night… until we remembered the vacant apartment.
So a smidge of B&E later, and we were saved from a very disruptive Sunday night.
We had no idea what could have clogged it. (Go ahead, laugh it up.)
When the plumbers came back on Monday, they finally got to the clog through a pipe in the roof somehow.
An hour later, we got an email from our building management. “The plumber said the clog looked like it was caused by some string of some sort. Maybe dental floss?”
“No way!” came out of my mouth as I slapped my forehead.
Nicole and I have been flushing dental floss down our toilet for the last 9 years.
One 3-foot piece of string isn’t enough to clog the toilets.
But 6.570 pieces of string is!
