September Is The Worst Month Of The Year

With two trading days left, the S&P 500 is down 3.9% this month. Yeech!

That’s very on-brand. Historically, September is the worst month of the year.

Since 1928, it’s down 1.1% on average.

(The only other negative months are February and May, both averaging -0.1% returns.)

So does that mean every year you should sell everything on August 31 and reinvest on October 1?

Absolutely not. (You saw that coming didn’t you?)

Out of the 95 Septembers since 1928, 44 have been positive and 51 have been negative.

So flip a coin and you’d have about the same odds.

There’s only one historical average you need to know – 10%.

That’s the long-term annual returns of the market.

Betting on anything else is a coin flip.
