How I Use Goals to Buy Stuff

It’s the 2nd best office investment I’ve made. (My couch is tough to beat.)

Why did it take me 4 months to save $912.45?

Because I didn’t buy it with cash. I bought it with a 4-month goal.

Well…okay…it’s probably more accurate to say I EARNED it with a 4-month goal.

(I tried to talk Uplift Desk to let me pay with my goal achievement, but they weren’t terribly receptive.)

I set a VERY aggressive savings goal from June to September which I successfully hit, and before I even started, I decided a standup desk would be my reward.

Let’s be honest – saving for the sake of saving is rewarding, but I respond much better when there’s also a physical reward at the end.

The other reason, I only buy THINGS based on achieving goals is to attach a sense of meaning to them.

If I had just bought the desk when the urge struck me, it’d just be another shiny object that would eventually lose it’s shimmer.

But NOW every time I stand up to type I get a microdose of accomplishment.
