AI won’t blow up the world

I went to urgent care yesterday. πŸ™„

I woke up on Monday with terrible soreness in my middle right back.

As a lifter I figured it was a sore muscle β€” even though I hadn’t lifted since Friday and it’s not a place I normally get sore. I foam rolled, stretched, did my mobility work. Couldn’t shake it.

After my workout this morning, my protein shake made me nauseous. It got steadily worse on my way to the office until I was hunched over at my desk by the time I got there.

Even water made me sick.

So I did what I’ve told my mom not to do a million times…

…I Gemini’d my symptoms.

Kidney stones was all I could see. So I scheduled urgent care, peed in a cup, and the doctor told me my kidneys were completely fine.

Sore muscle. Almost certainly.

I came home with nothing wrong with me but a bruised ego.

Here’s what actually happened: I saw the worst case scenario and panicked before the diagnosis even came in.

That sounds familiar to me.

It feels like what the AI-is-going-to-end-the-world rhetoric is doing right now. Pattern matching on scary headlines. Catastrophizing. The Terminator is coming.

But remember the internet? It imploded. Spectacularly. The dot-com crash wiped out trillions and the headlines were apocalyptic.

And yet – it transformed every aspect of our lives. How we work, communicate, shop, fall in love, get directions, waste time on Sunday afternoons.

Will AI stumble? Definitely. New things usually aren’t perfect out of the gate – and something this big and this fast could stumble pretty hard.

But will it change our lives forever?

I’m betting yes. (And that’s a bet on humanity. We always figure it out.)

P.S. If you’re in the camp that’s worried about AI, I get it. I’m clearly right there with you.

I Gemini’d a sore muscle and had myself in the ER by lunch!
