Financial Zen’s Core Values

It’s time to scale, which means it’s time to hire.  All the books tell you to hire for two things:

1. Skill Set

2. DNA

Skill set is pretty obvious. Can you do and/or learn the skills to do the job?

DNA is a little less straightforward. It’s how your employees fit into the company culture.

What do you hold important? What are your non-negotiables? What are your core values?

Last year (when I should have started recruiting) I developed the core values below.

Anyone I hire will possess these 5 characteristics:

1. Dent The Universe. Live and work for something bigger than yourself. It’s not a job or a career, it’s a calling.

2. Level Up. Every. Damn. Day. Growth only happens outside of your comfort zone. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

3. Find The Good. Be The Fun. If you don’t expect tomorrow to be better, why bother with today? Work hard, be professional, but have fun doing great things.

4. Run Past The Finish Line. To misquote Vince Lombardi, “If you meet expectations, you fail. If you exceed expectations, you pass.” Our finish line starts at overdelivering. Run past it.

5. Seek Extreme Ownership. Nothing is outside of your control. The buck stops with you. We are not victims.

And there you have it. I’ve been staring at these on my whiteboard for over a year, so I’d say they’re here to stay.

It won’t make finding the right hires easy, but on the other hand, it will ensure the people we do hire will level us up.

On that note, we’re hiring for a Member Service Associate. So if you know anyone with a couple of years of experience in financial planning, forward them this email.

Or better yet, introduce them to me.

Big things to come. Stay tuned…
