Labor Day became a thing in the late 1800’s.
It was a celebration of the labor union workers.
No one’s sure who’s idea it was originally. Two guys from rival unions have been credited for it.
Part of the confusion is that one’s last name was Maguire and the other was named McGuire.
And lastly, back then it wasn’t a 3 day weekend.
In the late 1800’s laborers worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
So basically it was an afternoon off for a parade!
