Hire a CPA. Do as I say, not as I do.

“…but my taxes are easy. Do I HAVE to use a CPA?”

My response is the same every time… Do as I say, not as I do.

Okay, I don’t actually say that, but I might as well.

What I actually respond with is “Even if ALL they do is give you 4 hours back on a Saturday, isn’t that worth a few hundred bucks?”

But I’m a hypocrite.

This year I logged over 25 hours filing Financial Zen’s business taxes.

It SHOULD be simple. My books are pretty clean, so just line up our P&L with tax forms.

SHOULD being the operative word. It never lines up perfectly and this year, it took me down a never-ending rabbit hole.

In the end, I wore down the square peg until it fit in the round hole.

Close enough. And getting it within $100 will clearly indicate ineptitude, not tax evasion.

After I burned my 3rd Saturday, I remembered this happens every year. Why do I do this to myself?

So I turned off the auto-renew on TurboTax Business and am in process of hiring a professional bookkeeper.

Now when people ask me “if they have to”, I can look them straight in the eye when I answer with a vehement YES!
