seconds later, it was received in Baltimore.
The significance of that event is that it was the first time in human history that information was
communicated instantaneously.
Until that point, all communications were delivered in person.
Mail was delivered by the mailman. Gossip was delivered by Edna, the neighborhood loudmouth. The
note was delivered by carrier pigeon.
The telegraph was the foundation for the information age we now live in.
