Lessons from today’s F1 Championship

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched yesterday’s grand prix yet, then don’t read this FZ Daily.  I don’t want to ruin it for you.

You don’t have to be a Formula 1 fan to appreciate what happened yesterday.

I’ll give you the 30,000 foot recap.

For the last 7 years Lewis Hamilton has dominated Formula 1 racing. He is to Formula 1 what Michael

Jordan was to basketball, Mike Tyson was to boxing and Tiger Woods was to golf in their heyday.
He dominates.

Last year, Lewis had tied Michael Schumacher’s record of 7 titles and if he won the championship this year he would stand on top of the mountain with 8.

But this year he had some serious competition from this Dutch guy driving for Team Red Bull named Max Verstappen.

Max hadn’t finished better than third since starting his F1 career in 2016.

But this year it all came together for him. Going into the last 4 races of the season, he was handily in first place.

Until Lewis got hot and won the last 3 races to tie the leaderboard going into the final race yesterday.

Only one other time had two drivers gone into the final tied for first place.

But after the first lap, Lewis pulled ahead and led the race for the next 54 laps. Max stayed in 2nd, but he steadily lost ground no matter what he tried.

He was so far behind going into the final 5 laps (out of 58) that the announcers had handed Lewis the victory.

And then it happened.  Out of nowhere, another driver far back in the pack crashed into the wall forcing the race marshals to call a in safety car in to slow down the race while they cleared the wreck.

This could be Max’s chance. But there were 5 lapped cars in between him and Lewis. Max would have to pass them before he could make a sprint for Lewis.

It was a far chance, but still a chance.

But the safety car went around 4 laps and it seemed Max would never get his chance and the race would end on a safety car. For Max fans, hope was dwindling.

And then the universe conspired in his favor and the race marshal instructed the 5 lapped cars to get out the way simultaneously as the safety car exited leaving just ONE LAP for Max to catch up and pass Lewis.

The cars roared into the first turn as Max took the inside and the lead. He zoomed past Lewis and never looked back.

He sped past the finish line upsetting the reigning champ and earning his first world title.

It was straight out of a movie.

The lesson is so obvious that it feels silly to even give it a voice.

Never, ever give up.  (Okay, call me silly.)

When you’re at the end of your rope, hold on.

The universe is conspiring in your favor and when you’ve paid your dues, you will get rewarded in ways that you never saw coming.

You just gotta hold on.
