Let’s go back to May 1st, 2016 to the dawn of Financial Zen. (Yes, again. Just indulge me.)
We were 6 months from the most “anticipated” presidential election in our lifetime.
If I had told you on that date 7 years ago that…
Trump would be elected|
Britain would exit the EU
A global pandemic would shut down the world.
Russia would invade Ukraine
Interest rates would skyrocket from 0% to 5% in 12 months
And inflation would be 9% at some point, May 1st, 2016.
…what would you have thought the S&P 500 would do over that 7 years?
Dumpster fire? Yeah, me too.
And yet… and yet…
$100,000 invested in an S&P 500 index fund 7 years ago would be worth $200,000 today.
Through all of that, you’re money would have doubled.
I keep that in mind when I hear predictions about:
AI taking over the world
Banks collapsing
The most anticipated recession in history
The next presidential election
Maybe all or none of that happens.
Either way time… and the markets… will march on.
