I’m not claiming to be a time management expert, but I’ve tried a lot of things and below is what’s working for me right now.
I hope it sparks some ideas of your own.
Friday Morning Routine
I like to plan my weeks out on Friday mornings. Fridays just exude good vibes and after a productive week, I’m feeling especially hopeful and optimistic.
Step 1) Review my accomplishments – First, I review my daily journal to reflect on all of my accomplishments for the week. This gets me feeling good about things.
Step 2) Review my business plan – Reviewing my goals and my high-level strategy for achieving them helps me focus on the top priorities.
Step 3) Fill in my afternoon power hours – 4 of my power hours each day are for appointments and various action items. First go in the appointments and then whatever time is left over gets filled in with 2 hour increments of action items for each part of my business (marketing, sales, product development, finance, HR, compliance/legal, ops)
Step 4) Fill in my morning power hours – The first two hours of my day are for my top priority. It’s before the rest of the world has woken up, so it’s 120 minutes of uninterrupted focus. I rank my action items by impact/importance and then set an aggressive goal for which ones I can knock off over those 14 hours.
Step 5) Write it on the wall – The final step is to write out each goal for the week on the whiteboard directly in front of my desk. It helps keep me undistracted by bright shiny objects throughout my week.
