Parents Are COVID-19’s Unsung Heroes

We are inspired by the front-line workers risking their lives to save others. We are indebted to the essential workers helping us maintain a shred of normalcy. But there are everyday heroes who are not getting 8pm howls every night in their honor. Parents are COVID-19’s unsung heroes.

We are all making sacrifices right now. We miss non-Zoom interaction with our friends and family. We miss going to the movies and going out to eat. We miss not lining up for the grocery store.

If we’ve proven anything to ourselves as a human race, it’s that we will step up and heed the call of the everyday hero when the time comes. But some of us deserve more credit than others.

To all the parents of school-age children, I’ve heard the stories and I stand in awe of you.

You are working a full-time job (if you’re lucky enough to still have a job).

You are making 3 meals a day (plus snacks).

You are keeping your kids on track w/ their 3 hours a day of schoolwork. (Then getting blown up by the teachers cracking their whips.)

You’re doing your best to keep the kids off the screens all day.

You have no time to yourself except the hour between putting the kids down and you passing out from exhaustion.

You are doing all this in confined quarters with 2-3 other people.

And lastly, it’s 24/7, 7 days a week with no real end in sight.

My hat’s off to you. You deserve special recognition for the sacrifices you are making. You may not get any media attention or 8pm howls, but you are heroes nonetheless.

Thank you for the inspiration. Parents are COVID-19’s unsung heroes.
