Last night, Nicole and I went to a wine tasting at our local wine bar in San Francisco.
And who was there, but one of my biggest business crushes/thought leaders – Naval Ravikant.
He’s a Silicon Valley icon, the founder of AngelList, and worth an estimated $60M.
I couldn’t help but notice he was rockin’ a regular, old iPhone 13 (maybe 14), but definitely NOT a Pro or Pro Max.
You can’t tell me anyone who has a 3-lensed iPhone didn’t buy it for the status of having the fanciest iPhone.
(I only know because I got an iPhone 13 Pro Max when I trialed an iPhone last year. ????)
I imagine when you actually have a ton of money, phone status becomes pretty uninteresting.
Second data point…
Just this morning we found out that the #2 guy at one of the biggest hedge funds in the world rocks a pair of Nicole’s old sunglass brand – Common Shade.
I can only assume he’s worth $1B+ because he wears his Common Shades while driving his Bugatti. (An entry-level Bugatti goes for $1.9M).
Yes, a billionaire driving a $2M car wears an $80 pair of 4-year-old sunglasses.
I’ll keep that in mind the next time I instinctively wonder “but what will people think?” before buying the cheaper option.
