What we can learn from Buster Posey’s retirement

It’s a bittersweet day for Giants fans.

In case you haven’t heard, one of the greatest catchers in the game and the unofficial face of the Giants

over the last 12 years retired today.

Like the show Seinfeld, Buster Posey is going out on top after an all-star season that helped the team

achieve the best regular season in Giants history.

But this FZ Daily isn’t about going out on top (although I’m sure there’s a lesson in there).

It’s about HOW he’s retiring. And that’s a lesson we will all need.

You see it’s popularly believed that Buster is retiring because he took last season off.

During that time off, he got to see what life after baseball would be like. And that helped him formulate

his post-career plan.

No matter how much you like or dislike your job, you should NEVER retire into nothing. You HAVE to

know what comes next before you close your current chapter.

This is particularly important for our Financial Zen community. We are all on track to retire insanely,

ridiculously early. As you know, 51 is the average retirement age.

With over half your life left to live, you’ll need plans that run deeper than “travel and wine”.

So before you retire, make sure to take the time to do the work to figure out what’s next.

Maybe even take a sabbatical like Buster did to see what it looks like without the panic of “oh my gosh,

this is is.”

It seems fitting that after giving so much to SF, Buster leaves us with one last homerun.

The difference is… that’s a homerun we can all hit.
