“I mean you can’t take it with you, which means our jobs are completely meaningless.”
Under the nervousness of the imminent best man’s speech, the groom’s main dude was a chatterbox of thoughts that landed on the meaning of life (and meaninglessness of our jobs).
(This was BEFORE any alcohol had been consumed!)
Until then I had been quiet, letting him relieve his anxiety.
But at this point, I instinctively and passionately broke into his monologue.
“I could not possibly disagree more. I impact people every single day.
That creates a ripple effect that extends beyond even those I’m directly helping.
Which is why I’m as passionate about my business as you are about your church.
It’s what I was put here to do and by serving others, I’m serving my greater purpose.
So no – while you can’t take your money with you – the legacy of the lives you’ve impacted will live beyond you if you’ve done it right.
That’s why I do what I do.
And that is anything but meaningless.”
