It was voluntary. It wasn’t a surprise. I knew exactly what I was getting into.
…and I regret nothing.
I heard my calling 18 months prior.
Like Kevin Costner, I had no choice but to listen to the whispers coming from the cornfields.
Except the whispers I heard were coming from the other side of the work/life chasm.
At the time I was on the side where “Work” is WORK.
I liked my job but didn’t want to do it forever. Vacations were the highlight of my year and weekends are always too short.
It was a helluva journey with a mountain of sacrifice, but I’m now on the other side.
“Work” is no longer WORK.
There’s nothing else I’d rather do every day. I’m freed from work/life balance. It’s now a meaningless phrase.
Vacations are an opportunity to spend time with my wife, but the value isn’t in the “not working”. Weekends are an opportunity to work undistracted by incoming emails and texts.
If you haven’t pierced through the “work is not work” membrane, it’s impossible to understand what it feels like.
Which is why I don’t write much about it in our messaging.
But trust me, once you’re living your life’s purpose – regardless if it’s pre or post-financial zen – nothing looks the same and you too will gladly look back on your sacrifices and regret nothing.
